DON SCOTT MACDONALD

Sentinels, oil on canvas, 36 x 60 in.

Don Scott Macdonald’s paintings are all about juxtapositions.“Somewhere between stillness and movement, earth and the ether” is where his work resides. Although his paintings appear as soft-focus landscapes, Don is far more interested in atmospheric renderings inspired by nature, that combine elements of minimalism, abstraction and traditional landscape painting. A San Francisco native living in Sonoma County, Don is surrounded by natural beauty from which he derives great inspiration.

“My paintings are composed from an accumulation of observations and dreams. Rather than recreating details of a static landscape on canvas, my work attempts to distill its essence. These paintings explore the juxtapositions of stillness with movement, representation with abstraction, and the earth with the ether. They convey a metaphor about who we are and what we feel — a balance of mystery and beauty, darkness and hope."

Holding degrees from California State University at Chico and Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, he is a highly-skilled, meticulous painter. Each of his canvases has between 15 and 30 extremely fine layers of oil paint. After many years, he discovered that a sable brush, most commonly used only for watercolors, was the best tool for achieving this result. There is a flawlessness to the surface of his paintings that is almost photographic.
