Mary Oros American, b. 1953

Mary Oros is a sculptor based in Benicia, California, whose free-standing works explore movement, gesture, and the expressive possibilities of form. Inspired by nature, dance, and body language, she begins each sculpture by “drawing in space” with her armature materials, allowing each line to respond intuitively to the one before it. Rather than working from a predetermined plan, Oros observes the sculpture as it develops, with particular attention to how the form moves through space and maintains a sense of continuity from every vantage point.

Her sculptures are constructed through a meticulous, highly physical process. By developing the internal armature until it mirrors the intended silhouette, Oros subsequently adds multiple coats of concrete, resulting in compositions that balance robust durability with a slender, ethereal presence. She finishes the surfaces with decorative concrete and integral color or, more recently, paint, emphasizing the tactile quality of the material and the movement of the underlying form. The resulting sculptures possess an intriguing tension between structural strength and visual delicacy.

Born in Dearborn, Michigan, in 1953, Oros earned a BFA in Sculpture from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1977 and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1975. Her work has been exhibited at the de Young Museum, Marin MOCA, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, SFMOMA Artists Gallery, Grounds For Sculpture, and numerous other venues. She received the Agnes Gund Award from the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Purchase Prize at Skowhegan, and in 2022 received Third Place in the 81st Crocker-Kingsley Exhibition. Her work is included in the permanent collection of Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey, as well as several notable private collections.
