Entangled Roots
Anna Sidana September 7 - October 12, 2024 Entangled Roots speaks to the intricate relationships between the various aspects of Sidana’s identity—her cultural heritage, personal memories, and the challenges of navigating life in a new land, especially as a woman. Her paintings serve as a visual metaphor for this journey, blending floral and arboreal motifs from her native India with symbols of strength and resilience, like barbs and thorns. These elements create a powerful narrative of overcoming adversity, growth, and transformation. Her brushstrokes, a harmonious blend of boldness and delicacy, capture the dualities of her experience—the beauty and the struggle, the familiar and the unknown. The vibrant canvases in this collection draw on the rich tapestry of her childhood memories in India, where cotton blooms, mango groves, and peacock feathers imprinted upon her a deep and permanent connection to the natural world. Drawing inspiration from the vast landscapes of Colorado and the enigmatic mysteries of the cosmos, Macdonald's artworks exist within a unique realm that quietly oscillates between serenity and dynamism. In his own words, "I'm intrigued by the poetic interplay of contrasts - the dance between stillness and motion, abstraction and representation. These paintings encapsulate our essence and our encounters with nature - a fragile equilibrium of beauty, enigma, shadows, and optimism." Read more -
Under the Big Black Sun
Cody Bayne July 22 - September 2, 2023 Under the Big Black Sun is a thought-provoking exhibition that explores the complexities of living in a city known for both its glamor and its dark underbelly. The show derives its name from two seminal moments in Los Angeles history: the release of the punk rock band X's album "Under the Big Black Sun" in 1983, and former MOCA curator Paul Schimmel's survey exhibition, Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974-1981, part of Pacific Standard Time in 2011. In this new body of work, Bayne harvests materials from the urban landscape, translating what is often seen as common ephemera into art. He transforms this found material into a unique vernacular that symbolizes the experience of living in a challenging modern city, where the urban legend of the California dream often clashes with the reality of life.
