Ellen Richman American, b. 1964

Overview
There is a mathematical equation to hue which determines how the colors and forms work together.

Ellen Richman (b. 1964, Minneapolis, MN) is an abstract painter whose work is driven by a precise and deeply intuitive understanding of color. Her paintings unfold through the interplay of hue, value, and form, where subtle shifts create moments of tension, balance, and unexpected harmony. Each composition is built through a process of discovery, guided as much by instinct as by structure.

Raised in a creative family in Minneapolis, Richman developed an early connection to art through frequent visits to the Walker Art Center and a steady practice of making. Encounters with the work of Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, and Sol LeWitt were formative, sharpening her sensitivity to structure, repetition, and reduction. She was also influenced by the bold graphic language of the 1970s and the clarity of mid-century design.

Richman studied Fine Art at the University of Minnesota, where she began in sculpture before shifting her focus to painting and earning her BFA. A pivotal period in the Yucatán expanded her understanding of color. The intensity of Caribbean light and atmosphere pushed her palette toward greater saturation and complexity. From that point on, color became the central force in her work.

Her paintings are built incrementally, with each decision setting up the next. Working from a limited palette of black, white, red, yellow, and blue, she develops nuanced and often unexpected relationships between colors. Her compositions move between geometric structure and organic rhythm, creating spaces that feel both intentional and open.

A quiet rigor underpins the work. Paintings are adjusted, reconsidered, and refined until a sense of equilibrium is reached. The result can appear spare, even effortless, but the process behind it is exacting. What remains is a distilled visual language in which color carries both structure and feeling.

Over the past 25 years, Richman has exhibited widely across the United States and internationally. In Minnesota, she developed and led an Abstract Painting program at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, where she also juried, curated, and produced annual abstract exhibitions from 2006 to 2019. Her commissioned projects include work for Northmarq Capital and the Westin Hotel in Indianapolis, as well as numerous private collections. She has also collaborated with BOCCARA Art in Paris on a series of artist-designed rugs. Her work is held in prominent corporate collections including Deloitte, Boston Scientific, Phillips Beverage Company, and the Bentson Foundation.
