Jeffrey Beauchamp American, b. 1964
In his current work, Beauchamp marries his fondness for 1970s-era supergraphics with the swirling grandeur of Leonardo’s Deluge drawings, creating imagined terrains that are both playful and monumental. His process is one of patience and discovery: extensive sketching, layering, and reworking until unexpected forms emerge, like unplanned characters stepping onto a stage. Rooted in the traditions of classical painting yet informed by pop culture and daily observation, his visual language balances reverence with irreverence, sophistication with wit.
Based in Marin County, California, Beauchamp moves between observation and invention much as a musician shifts between melody and improvisation. His deep connection to music, color, and narrative shapes compositions that feel both carefully composed and alive with spontaneity. Trained in both the visual and sonic arts, he studied at Clark University in Massachusetts before earning his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Over the decades, his work has been championed by leading West Coast galleries, honored with two SECA Award nominations from SFMOMA, and exhibited at institutions including the Triton Museum of Art, the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, and the Napa Valley Museum. His paintings reside in private collections across the United States and abroad, carrying with them the coastal light, layered history, and restless curiosity of the place he calls home.
