Miquel Gelabert Spanish, b. 1979

Overview

Miquel Gelabert (b. 1979, Blanes, Spain) is a painter based near Barcelona whose work has become a defining voice in the renewal of contemporary Catalan abstract landscape painting. Inheriting the lineage of Miró, Dalí, Tàpies, and Arranz-Bravo, he reimagines the pictorial tradition of the region, restoring its expressive depth and emotional resonance for the 21st century. For Gelabert, the landscape is not a backdrop but a living, psychological space — a field where perception, memory, and emotion converge. His work redefines the relationship between humanity and the natural world through a uniquely introspective vision of the landscape.

Rooted in the coastal environs of his hometown of Blanes, Gelabert’s paintings are meditations on nature that verge on the spiritual. His approach is slow, analytical, and persistent: an act of sustained attention that balances harmony and tension. Each canvas operates as a threshold between the tangible and the imagined — between the mutable forms of nature and the artist’s inner projection. His brushwork, layered and deliberate, captures atmosphere as a state of mind, rendering landscape as a condition of being rather than a fixed view.

Over the past decade, Gelabert has expanded his formal vocabulary, integrating lines, grids, and geometric intervals into his organic compositions. These abstract interventions serve as visual windows or structural pauses, inviting reflection on the act of seeing itself. Despite this evolution, his work maintains an incorruptible coherence — returning to familiar imagery with warmth, restraint, and subtle variation. The result is a deeply humanized vision of landscape: fertile, reflective, and enduring.

Since earning his BFA at the University of Barcelona, Gelabert’s accomplishments have defined a career of steady growth and artistic integrity. His early solo exhibitions across Spain quickly earned institutional recognition, culminating in major shows at the Fundació Arranz-Bravo that established him as a leading figure in contemporary Catalan painting. Over the past decade, his collaboration with Franklin Bowles Galleries in New York and Suomei Gallery in Shanghai has expanded his international visibility, complemented by participation in prominent exhibitions and art fairs throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. His work now forms part of public and private collections including the Fundació Arranz-Bravo, Casa Saladrigas, Centre Cultural Cambrils, the Lawren Harris House in Toronto, Quest Group in London, and NCL Norwegian Cruise Line — affirming his position as an artist of enduring influence and reach.
