Gustavo Ramos Rivera (b. 1940, Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico) is a San Francisco-based painter and printmaker whose vibrant abstract works are deeply rooted in memory, cultural heritage, and personal symbolism. Drawing from the colors, landscapes, and everyday experiences of his childhood in Mexico, Ramos Rivera transforms recollections of family, nature, and community into richly layered paintings, monotypes, and collages. His compositions shimmer with luminous fields of color, expressive mark-making, and a distinctive visual vocabulary that bridges personal history with universal human experience.

Raised in a small Mexican border town, Ramos Rivera’s artistic journey began at an early age when his father encouraged his creative pursuits by allowing him to paint murals on the walls of their adobe home. The sensory experiences of his youth—watching his mother cook, exploring his grandmother’s garden, and swimming in the nearby creek—continue to inform his practice decades later. His works serve as visual reflections of memory, preserving the emotional resonance of place while exploring themes of identity, transformation, and belonging.

Over more than five decades, Ramos Rivera has developed a singular artistic language influenced by both his Mexican heritage and the traditions of postwar abstraction. His work is held in numerous prominent collections, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The Mexican Museum, Crocker Art Museum, Nevada Museum of Art, San Jose Museum of Art, De Saisset Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, and Stanford University Libraries.

A self-taught artist, Ramos Rivera has spent the majority of his career living and working between San Francisco, Mexico, and Europe. Since moving to San Francisco in 1969, he has become an important figure in the Bay Area art community, recognized for a practice that honors personal memory while expanding the possibilities of abstraction.
