Overview

Pamela Walsh Gallery presents Acts of Making, a group exhibition featuring contemporary artists whose practices are driven by experimentation, material investigation, and the physical act of creation. Bringing together painting, sculpture, and mixed media, the exhibition explores making not simply as a means to an end, but as an essential part of the artwork’s meaning.

At the heart of Acts of Making is the belief that the process of creation remains present within the finished work. Layers accumulate, gestures evolve, and surfaces preserve the decisions, revisions, and discoveries made in the studio. The resulting works reveal the physical and intellectual labor behind their formation, allowing process itself to become a visible and meaningful component of the artwork.

Press release

Palo Alto, CAPamela Walsh Gallery is pleased to present Acts of Making, a group exhibition featuring contemporary artists whose practices are driven by experimentation, material investigation, and making as both method and meaning. Opening on August 29, 2026, with an Artist Reception from 5 to 7 pm, the exhibition will remain on view through October 10.

At the heart of the exhibition is the belief that the act of creation remains present in the finished work. Layers accumulate, gestures evolve, and surfaces record the history of their making. The resulting works make visible the physical and intellectual labor of making, where process becomes an essential part of the artwork's meaning.

The emphasis on making has shaped some of the most significant artistic movements of the past century. From the gestural innovations of Abstract Expressionism to later explorations of materiality and process, artists have recognized that the act of creation can be as meaningful as the finished work. The artists in Acts of Making continue this conversation through practices that expand the expressive possibilities of painting, sculpture, and mixed media.

Acts of Making features gallery artists Myles Bennett, Miquel Gelabert, Fernando Reyes, Ellen Richman, Petra Schott, Raul de la Torre and Craig Waddell alongside guest artists Mary Oros, Gustavo Ramos Rivera and Gordon Studer.

Founded in 2019, Pamela Walsh Gallery is located in a historic 1929 Birge Clark-designed building in downtown Palo Alto.
